Yesterday, Fab wouldn't cease its pathological scanning no matter what I did. The solution seemed to be to reboot and retry. Ahem.īefore yesterday, I thought the problem was either a Vista or a hardware issue. If you hit Cancel, Fab will lock up tighter than a virgin's. Hell, you can even take the dvd out of the device and Fab will scan forever. Over the last two months I have experience the following: About 1 out of 5 times, all versions of Fab (including the latest) will start scanning the inserted dvd, the light will go out on the device (indicating a cessation of access), but Fab will just merrily go on scanning and scanning and scanning.

I believe I've uncovered a rather agregious bug. It appears that my glowing approbation of DVDFab Platinum was premature. If you want a piece of software to stop working-well, just buy it. If you want it to start raining, put on suntan oil. Since Slysoft advertises compatibility with XP圆4 I think I'll go with AnyDVD/Clone for "The Mighty Kong" (my 64-bit box). I'm typing this on a system running XP圆4. Over time, that's a lot less wear and tear on the dvd device than using it every time you want to watch a movie.įab has released a great free decrypter and Slysoft has released a great free virtual dvd. On my dual-core 1.8 Turion with 4gb of ram, it takes Fab about 20-25 minutes to rip a 2-hour movie to ISO. I prefer to use Fab to rip the movie to an ISO on the HD and then play it on VCD. Even though it is not officially supported on Vista, VCD has never ever failed to play any movie decrypted by Fab.

However, I'm also in love with Slysoft's Virtual Clonedrive. Programs whose UI's show good taste-that is, written by artistic programmers-are generally better programs. Very stable, well-integrated (just one program is all you need) and just plain pretty. I decrypt 4-6 commercial dvds a week and it has never failed to successfully rip a movie. I used Fab Platinum for 30 days and then bought it. I downloaded and used a whole bucket of different programs (but not Slysoft's stuff).
